Behind The Scenes: Alex & Sony
At Newton Kay, we take pride in selecting pieces that tell a story. Time and again we return to photography duo Alex & Sony for their Fine Art Prints, capturing coastal beach scenes to breathtaking scenery, in Aotearoa and beyond. We speak to the Alex and Sony about their inspirations, favourite places to capture and how to select the right piece for a home.
Tell us about yourselves.
We’re Alex and Sony, the photographers behind our landscape and travel art print shop, Alex and Sony.
What initially drew you to landscape photography? Has your style evolved over time?
We love travelling and being in nature. As photographers, capturing beautiful scenes was a natural extension of that.
Our style hasn’t evolved too much. We always shoot with intention, creating images that make you feel something; calm, connected, or inspired.
How does living in New Zealand influence your photography eye? Have there been any stand out moments in your travels that have shaped the way you capture places.
Life moves at a slower pace here in New Zealand, and we think that sense of stillness is woven into our images.
Travel, on the other hand, brings a different kind of energy. Unfamiliar places, feeling both small and in awe – those moments remind us that photography isn’t just about the scenery, but about the emotion and memory tied to it. That’s what we try to bring into every image: a sense of place and a sense of feeling.
Are there any places in New Zealand that are your favourite to capture?
You can’t really beat the South Island. And every season feels like its own world. But we also love capturing quieter, less-traveled places like Northland and the West Coast beaches because they’re so unique compared to the rest of the country.
What’s something you wish more people knew about Alex & Sony (the brand)?
That it’s really just the two of us – out there chasing light, waiting for the right moment. Every piece is personal; it’s not mass-produced or outsourced. We want people to know that when they bring one of our prints into their home, they’re not just buying a landscape, they’re bringing in a memory, a story, and a piece of how we experienced that place.
What’s your best piece of advice when it comes to selecting a piece for the home?
Choose something that speaks to you. A piece should resonate emotionally. And then size, bigger is usually better.
Hard question – is there a piece you are gravitating towards at the moment?
Oh this is too hard to answer as it's always changing. We both have pieces we return to again and again because they hold a personal memory for us.
What artwork of yours have Newton Kay incorporated into their interior designs that have stood out to you?
We love how they always choose the most calming pieces. Art that’s just timeless.
What do you want people to feel when they have an Alex & Sony piece in their home?
We want it to feel like something that grounds your space and connects you back to something, whether it’s nature or a memory; a sense of wonder, new beginnings (as one of our customers told us), or simply joy and appreciation of a beautiful scene.
What do you feel stands out about Newton Kay’s work?
It always feels timeless and relaxed, and we love seeing how our work fits right in.
